Written Response

'Cut' By: Sylvia Plath

This poem is about her cutting her thumb by accident, she cuts hers thumb instead of an onion and she describes the pain, feeling, looks and her attitude. This poem I think is a bit weird because at the start of the poem it she says ' What a thrill ', she is excited and surprised, but at the end she is furious, calling herself ' Dirty girl'.

In this poem she uses simile and some rhyming. One simile she used was describing how her thumb was dangling and flapping around, 'A flap like a hat', I think she is trying to create an image in the readers head. Also she uses rhyming, here are two examples. 'A flap like a hat ' and ' I have taken the pill to kill '.

As I said in the first paragraph the mood changes a lot at the start and at the finish, from surprised to angry.

Finally in my opinion this is an good poem because she creates a lot of images in the readers head and also it is not a really long poem like some others. I would have liked it a lot more if it had more rhyming in it.
