On The Poem

' Tangi '

By Hone Tuwhare

I will be writing about the main ideas and the techniques used in this poem and the main idea. The main idea is how different cultures deal with death and grief. The techniques used in this poem is the contrast between the European funeral and the Tangi ( Maori ) and the uses of negatives.

The important idea in this poem is grief and the author uses negatives to show this. Some examples of words are 'nor' and 'not', these words help understand the main idea.He is saying how uncomfortable he feels at a European funeral. And how he doesn’t belong there.   You know that the poem is going to be sad and negative by reading the title. You know someone important has died. The author ' Hone Tuwhare ' feels disconnected at the European funeral, but at the Tangi he feels safe and belonging. From uncomfortable to comfortable, sort of like turning negative to positive, using words like 'beauty' to describe the Tangi. He replaces the negatives with positive words like 'caught', 'saw' and 'heard' to show he feels at home and belonging at the Tangi. These words and quotes help to explain the main idea, how the two different cultures deal with grief and how Hone Tuwhare feels at the European funeral and the Tangi. Using lines like 'I hear her in the wind'. These quotes helps to support the main idea, how he feels at the European funeral and the Tangi, positive to negative, uncomfortable to comfortable.

The author also shows the contrast of 2 different funerals, the European funeral and the Tangi. This is the part of the main idea, Hone Tuwhare is comparing the two funerals and how they are different. The length of the two funerals is different, that is just one difference. In the poem you can also tell it is two different funerals. You can tell he is at a European funeral because of the English flowers in the European funeral, the 'violets and carnations'. Another sign that he is at  a European funeral is the ‘bordered path’. And to represent the Tangi, is the 'bowed heads' and the 'Green-Leaved anguish'( wrap around head). These quotes help the main idea of how different the two cultures deal with grief and how Hone different he feels at the European funeral and the Tangi.  Using lines like 'I hear her in the wind'. These quotes helps to support the main idea, how he feels at the European funeral and the Tangi, positive to negative.

The author purpose is saying how he feels at the European funeral and the Tangi. Also how the cultures deal with grief. Using negatives and  the contrasting funerals. He is describing the two funerals and how they are different from each other. In my opinion he has described how he feels at the funerals and has done a good job of showing there is two funerals. He feels safe and belonging at the Tangi but the European funeral he feels out of place.
